Dental research shows that eating gluten can actually cause erosion of tooth enamel. This in turn can lead to an increased risk for developing cavities. Several studies show the connection. Additionally, research states that tooth erosion can be the only symptom of gluten sensitivity, gluten intolerance, or celiac disease for some people.

Antibacterial Properties of Aloe vera on Intracanal Medicaments against Enterococcus faecalis Biofilm at Different Stages of Development
Background. Use of herbal compounds as an intracanal medicament in the field of endodontics has become noteworthy, one of which is the Aloe vera compound whose antibacterial effect has already been proven in the planktonic form of Enterococcus faecalis. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the antibacterial effect of Aloe vera on E. faecalis biofilms at the 4th and 6th week of development. Materials and Methods. 130 single root canal teeth without anomalies and caries were used. They were divided into two groups of 65 teeth for four and six weeks of biofilm production. Five samples of each group were examined for confirmation of biofilm formation under an electron microscope. Study groups were investigated with an antimicrobial agent as an intracanal medicament including 20 samples treated with Aloe vera, calcium hydroxide, and phosphate-buffered saline, and biofilm and survival of pathogens were investigated. Dentin chip suspensions were used for colony-forming unit (CFU) counting to estimate remaining E. faecalis counts. Results. The CFU mean in the 4th week subgroup in Aloe vera, phosphate-buffered saline, and calcium hydroxide was 0, 69166.66 ± 31688.58, and 25000 ± 30822.07, and in the 6th week, it was 136.36 ± 323.33, 95000 ± 12247.44, and 27501.66 ± 36570.34, respectively, which showed a significant difference between the used materials (). Conclusion. Aloe vera, in contrast to calcium hydroxide, eliminated 4th and 6th week biofilms and showed remarkable antibacterial properties against E. faecalis biofilm. These results support potency of Aloe vera to use as a natural antimicrobial material in the intracanal medicament.

Evolution of the Oral Microbiome and Dental Caries SpringerLink
Purpose of Review Our paper reviews how dietary changes during human evolution have contributed to the increased incidence and prevalence of dental caries in modern populations by shifting the oral microbiome from a “healthy” to “carious” state. We addressed two questions: (1) what is the microbial difference between the states of health and caries, and (2) how has the development of an agricultural diet impacted the oral microbiome? Recent Findings The application of next-generation sequencing has revealed the complexity of the oral microbiome and lack of a simple compositional difference between health and caries. Genetic analysis of the oral microbiome from contemporary and ancient humans has shown that the introduction of agriculture was associated with increased frequency of caries-related bacteria and the evolution of the key carious pathogen, Streptococcus mutans. Summary The adoption of an agricultural diet has contributed to a modern rise in caries by changing the oral microbiome ecology. Identification of evolutionary factors that have influenced the oral microbiome in health and caries, and how the two states differ functionally, as opposed to compositionally, may help to reduce the current burden of caries.

So what can you do to support the health of your mouth? Here are some actionable tips for optimal oral health:
Avoid gluten: one of the most straightforward tactics is simply to remove gluten from your diet, just as you would to manage other manifestations of celiac disease
Avoid antibacterial mouthwashes: just like antibiotics, antibacterial mouthwashes can’t tell the difference between good and bad bacteria and just kill it all. This can damage the balance of bacteria in your oral microbiome and ultimately do more harm than good
Take probiotics: probiotics can not only help support the balance of bacteria in your gut, they can also support the balance of bacteria in your mouth, lowering the chance of bad breath, cavities, gum disease and even tooth loss
Avoid acidic foods: if oral lesions exist, acidic foods can exacerbate discomfort and inhibit healing.
Try intermittent fasting: intermittent fasting allows you to limit the amount of sugars and other particles in your mouth, and the time they spend there. This helps to naturally reduce the amount of bacteria that causes plaque, which can lead to inflammation of the gums. Keeping your mouth free of food for 12-16 hours or more also gives your mouth a break and allows it time to heal any sores or lesions that exist. Keeping your mouth free of food for 16 to 24 hours is like a daily detox for the gums and teeth.
Consider nutrient testing and supplementation: since celiac disease and gluten sensitivity can lead to nutritional deficiencies which can exacerbate oral health concerns, consider testing your levels of key nutrients and supplementing as needed to get your levels back into healthy ranges where needed.
Test for food sensitivities: your sensitivities may extend beyond gluten. Ask your doctor for a comprehensive food sensitivity test to identify other foods that may be contributing to compromised health – whether in your mouth, your gut, or elsewhere!
